Quality

Ellegaard Göttingen Minipigs A/S (EGM) attributes great significance to the quality system as an integral part of the production process and as a prerequisite for continued growth and development. Our quality system is structured around our AAALAC accreditation with the addition of relevant elements from the ISO 9000 standard and from GLP (Good Laboratory Practice). Our quality management system is documented in standard operating procedures (SOPs) covering all areas of our production process. This documentation is available to all employees and their knowledge of this is documented in each employee's training journal.

AAALAC

Our facilities have been AAALAC accredited since 1998 and have been fully reaccredited ever since. The AAALAC quality management system is based on a US standard which has become internationally recognised. The Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC International) is a private organisation that sets standards for animal welfare within the experimental animal industry. It accredits research institutions and producers of experimental animals, which comply with its standards. The standards include regulations for the experimental animals, pen systems, safety for personnel and animals, training, facilities, equipment, etc.

The accreditation requires annual reporting and a detailed programme description must be submitted every three years, after which the facilities are reviewed by two AAALAC site visitors. If the facilities and the conditions can be certified, the accreditation is extended.

Animal welfare committee

The animal welfare committee is responsible for ensuring that the production of minipigs at Ellegaard Göttingen Minipigs takes place in accordance with national and European law and with internal guidelines which include animal welfare. The committee meets twice a year and minutes are kept of discussions and decisions. One member of the committee is not affiliated with the Company and is not a member of the immediate family of a person who is affiliated with the company.

The committee’s functions include:

  • oversight and evaluation of Ellegaard Göttingen Minipigs' animal care programme
  • inspection of barrier facilities, focusing on animal welfare;
  • review and assessment of internal guidelines (SOPs) for production and breeding of minipigs in barrier facilities; and
  • review of new initiatives affecting animal welfare.
