Ellegaard Göttingen Minipigs A/S provides training courses in the basic handling of minipigs. The minipig is a rather new species in the laboratory and for this reason we would like to pass on to our customers the considerable experience we have accumulated in recent decades at the Ellegaard facility. Furthermore the correct handling minimizes stress and improves the welfare for the minipigs.
The courses have both a theoretical and a practical component. We start out with the theoretical part. The standard syllabus covers the housing and husbandry of minipigs, their behaviour, biology, basic handling, training and habituation, an introduction to anaesthesia, analgesia and euthanasia, and routine laboratory procedures. We also cover vascular access, health monitoring and signs of disease, pain and pain relief. Please contact us to get the full programme.
The course also contains a strong practical component where participants carry out many of the procedures covered in the theoretical part, under the close guidance of experienced tutors. Of course not everyone gets to try every single procedure, but we try to make sure that everyone gets a hands-on experience wherever possible. Group size is restricted to a maximum of four participants which enhances the development of practical skills and interaction with the tutors. After completing the practical part, each participant will have successfully participated in various methods of handling, blood sampling, oral dosing, injection techniques and percutaneous catheterisation.
We run the courses at our Dalmose facility when it is most convenient for you, but we can also conduct a modified course at a customer’s own facility. The option of receiving in-house training on your own premises can make it highly cost effective to train a large number of staff, as they do not need to travel. The course can be arranged according to the specific needs and interests of the participants.
The topics covered in the syllabus comply with modules 2 and 3 in Appendix A of The Education and Training of Personnel under the Animals Act of 1986 and the course is accredited by The Institute of Biology, UK.
Our course has been approved by the Animal Inspectorate under the Danish Ministry of Justice.
Finally, attending one of these courses provides a valuable opportunity to visit Ellegaard Göttingen Minipigs, see our breeding facility and establish contacts with people within the company who form part of our customer support network.
