Training of minipigs: Practical examples on how to succeed with training of minipigs
Webinar Gil Doron | MD Biosciences, Israel Cathrine Juel Bundgaard | Novo Nordisk, Denmark Manuela Teti | Labcorp, UKThis webinar presents 3 speakers each sharing their experience with training of minipigs in a study set-up:
Gil Doron, MD Biosciences | Training GMP for routine surgical procedures, such as anesthesia administration and weight bearing, significantly reduces stress for both the animals and the technicians. This approach not only fosters a more efficient and cooperative working environment but also minimizes variability and noise in experimental results. Central to the success of such training are positive reinforcement and consistent repetition. This presentation will explore key techniques for training animals in these procedures, highlighting practical strategies and tips to enhance effectiveness and reliability.
Cathrine Juel Bundgaard, Novo Nordisk | Pigs are very cooperative animals and it is not difficult to work with them in research settings in a non-aversive way. This way of working with animals is an advantage for the animal, the people that work with the animal and the data gained by the research. I will show examples of different socialization and training programmes we use at Novo Nordisk, giving examples of simple achievements that we use in our everyday work with GMPs and slaughter pigs, as well as give examples of more advanced training. I will show how different training programmes enable us to get results that we would not have been able to, without training and cooperation from the pigs, and how animal welfare can be markedly improved in specific animal models, by incorporating targeted training in the protocol.
Manuela Teti, Labcorp | Minipigs are increasingly viewed as a valid alternative non-rodent species in inhalation toxicology to dogs and nonhuman primates. To ensure maximum compliance of minipigs during a study, a solid program of acclimatisation and training / habituation to the inhalation-specific study procedures is required. This presentation describes the current acclimatisation and training programs performed at Labcorp for minipig inhalation studies and provides insights on training protocols and advice on challenges and success rates.

Mar 16, 2025 | - Mar 20, 2025 |
SOT ToxExpo 2025
725 Orlando, Florida, USAJoin us at this year's SOT in Orlando, Florida where you can meet:
John Cameron, Regional Business Development Director North America at Ellegaard Bioresearch
Charlotte Hoeg Thygesen, Scientific Director at Ellegaard Göttingen Minipigs
Jens Ellegaard, Chairman of the Board of Directors at Ellegaard Göttingen Minipigs
They will be at booth No. 725 all week, and can tell you all about the IgG Humanized Göttingen Minipigs, Göttingen Micropigs, and the EU project NH Pig.
Also, we have arranged for an Exhibitor Hosted Session (EHS) on the topic "Göttingen Minipigs: Thirty Years of Advancing R&D now with Gene Editing to Tackle Specific Challenges".
Göttingen Minipigs have been widely used in developing various modalities and devices, and for more than thirty years, Ellegaard has compiled data and publications on their applications. New models, including gene-edited Göttingen Minipigs like the IgG1/IgG4 and Göttingen Micropigs, address drug development challenges mitigating risk of clinical failure. The status of these models and the EU Project NHPig, a new consortium aiming to replace NHPs with Göttingen Minipigs in drug development, are discussed.
Join the EHS 17 March, 10:45-11:45 am, room W208B.

IgG Humanized Göttingen Minipigs
Ellegaard Göttingen Minipigs A/S
Genetically altered Göttingen Minipigs, carrying a mini repertoire of human Ig-γ1/γ4 heavy and the human κ light chain genes, show tolerance to a broad range of human antibodies. This provides a novel model for safety testing and an important and viable alternative for toxicology studies of therapeutic antibodies in non-human primates.
